First, but not necessarily foremost, let me say that I love the fact that the protagonist is a strong woman; even her name indicates her character: 'Steele'. Even more than that, perhaps, I love that her gender is not a focal point of the book. The author very wisely makes no big deal of it whatsoever; it is merely incidental to her, and she has no chips on her very capable shoulders. The plot and characterization were very strong in this book. It's rare for someone who reads as compulsively as I do to come across a unique plot, but this was certainly one I hadn't encountered before. The pace was breathtaking; the plot never rested, but continued at warp speed throughout.
This may have been too much of a good thing, I felt at some points, because I would have liked a little more background and a slightly slower pace - but I'm not even sure that's really how I feel about it. I mean, who can complain about airships, pirates, automatons, technologically proficient villains, exotic settings, realistic characters, war, mystery, and zombies -- yes, zombies -- all racing past as you turn the pages with baited breath waiting to discover what's next? Not I. I would certainly object if there were no prospect of a follow-up, since so many events within the story were left dangling; as it is, however, I look forward to subsequent books in the series.
The one real objection I had, which cost the book one star in my estimation, was the apparent lack of an editor - most particularly in the beginning chapters. I cringed every time I read 'poured' instead of 'pored'; more evidence that Autocorrect is not going to solve anyone's problems in the long run. There are other examples of this as well, and in the first chapters of the book I was irritated several times by the over-narration of simple events.
It is vital for authors to trust their readers to be capable of understanding things left unspecified; authors must realize that readers pick up books in order to employ their own imaginations as well as spectating someone else's. We do not need to be told every single movement or expression of every character; this slows the pace of narration to the point that a reader can begin to lose interest.
Apart from these relatively small irritations, this was an absolutely magnificent book that I would certainly recommend. I eagerly anticipate reading the sequel(s).

The Hellfire Chronicles Blood in the Skies G D Falksen 9781434432087 Books Reviews
A fun, fast paced book with a refreshing and interesting world. Falksen really knows the time period upon which he has based the novel and has done a great job of painting out a world full of intrigue, steam power and airship pirates. Can't wait for the next one.
slow story line. did not like the setting for the story. wasn't believeable
I can't wait for more in this series.
The novel is an exciting, fast-paced adventure with interesting characters and a plot that begs for sequels. The two CDs that match it provide a great introduction to steampunk music.
With a strong female lead, this book is fast paced, interesting, and full of surprises. I enjoy especially how strong yet how human the main character is. I am looking forward to the continuation of this series. G. D. Falksen writes in a colorful style that enables you to not only understand the characters and their interaction but also get a clear view of the landscape and culture of the world he is creating.
This book Was a great lead and introduction to the whole steam punk genre, never having Read a "specific steam punk" book before. I was immediately drawn into this World.
I was able to keep up with the plot and even with the Use of the steam punk world with enough retrench throughout the Scene I was able to follow. Only to realise at the end of the book Was a glossary. Although not needed Was a great addition and helped to confirm the images l held were Correct.
the only downside to this book is .... l am left Waiting and wanting to find out What does happen next.
This book provides not only a good, fast paced story, but peeks into what may very well turn out to be a much larger epic than I expected after the first few pages. The pace reminds me of the old Indiana Jones movies, with the characters narrowly escaping one dangerous encounter only to have the odds raised against them on the next page. But the stereotypes for the characters are broken down and reassembled in a way that adds a fresh twist to the whole serial adventure thing.
All in all it was a great read, and I am looking forward to the next installment.
