First Thoughts:'What do I say about this book? It was beyond anything I had imagined. I have been wanting to read this book for some time now but kept putting it off because of all the other books pushed my way but finally due to a mishap of not getting "Lemniscate" on time I decided to finally read this and boy am I glad I did! I Loved Weston and Sophie, their relationship is beyond anything I could ever hope for in my life but it sure is good to read about it in books....
Summary:
Alright it's going to be short because there's a lot of mystery in this book and I think it's better if you discover it on your own but I'll give you a brief summary.

The Pace Shelena Shorts 9780982500507 Books Reviews
I was a little unsure about this one at first, as it had a pretty slow start. But I ended up really enjoying it for its originality and captivating premise.
For me, this book is a lot like Cara Lynn Shultz's Spellbound...but a million times better. You have that concept of reincarnation and two semi-starcrossed lovers trying to find each other throughout history. But where Spellbound often felt contrived and the relationship between the two main characters forced, I never got either of those feelings with The Pace. On the contrary, I thought Shelena Shorts' debut had a sweet romance that developed naturally and it broke out of the mold of paranormal romance.
First, let me say that Wes and Sophie's relationship was precious. While I noticed a lot of Twilight comparisons (I know - sorry! I brought up the dreaded Twi-reference), they didn't distract me from these two characters who genuinely cared for each other. And I loved that they dated like normal people before Wes ever dropped the I'm-an-immortal-creature bomb. And you think you've got everything figured out about the book, then a little over halfway through, Shelena throws you for another loop with an added paranormal element that left me thirsting for more.
As for Wes' paranormal-ness, I liked that he was something completely different than I've ever read. It was all very Dr. Frankenstein/steampunk/hardcore sci-fi, which I loved. And he's a nice guy, which was refreshing. He never once tried to hurt Sophie or said something mean to her or wanted to eat her. Overall, he was just a good guy. He was kind of the epitome of "beta hero" for me, in that he wasn't a dominant personality but somehow still wormed his way into your heart anyway. I <3 those kinds of heroes!
But really, my favorite part of the story was the past relationships between Wes and Sophie in her past lives. I loved, loved, loved reading about how they met in the early 1900s, then found each other again in the 1960s. And the knowledge never felt like an info dump. I actually wanted her to tell me even more, for Wes to keep talking about it for more pages. I don't think I've ever been so interested in a character's backstory. It was brilliant!
Like I said, this book a rough beginning for me. The first half of the story has a pretty slow pacing. (Hah! Pace...pun lol) But by the halfway mark, everything really started coming together, and the last third of the book was mesmerizing. And the ending! How can she leave it that way?! Talk about cliffhanger! I'm reminded of the ending of Clockwork Angel, which literally ended in the middle of a conversation.
The Pace is a great addition to any paranormal romance junkie's library. It has some really interesting, unique elements. There's reincarnation, starcrossed lovers, alligator blood, a psycho ex-boyfriend, and lots of other juicy tidbits. Definitely check out this beginning of what's sure to be an amazing series!
When I started this book I thought it was great, easily earning 4-5 stars. But by the time you reach the halfway mark the author has revealed the mystery of who Wes is and as the reader I was easily able to guess the secret of who Sophie was. Thus as a reader I was left wondering what was going to happen and frankly no longer caring.
I read another review here that complained of the author telling the story and not showing it which I agree with completely. The story is told through the first person viewpoint of Sophie which quickly degenerates into her telling us the reader what is happening, even whole conversations are told by Sophie. At this point I quickly lost interest in the characters, I no longer cared what happened to them, I simply wanted to get to the end of this crash hoping something would happen that would salvage the story.
Alas something does happen, it comes out of left field and is possibly the most stupid contrived ending I have ever read. I would have been happier with something predictable, then the author ends the book on a cliffhanger. Perhaps she hoped that this would lead to the purchase of the second book but honestly I care so little for the characters they can just stay on their cliff, as for me I'm moving on.
