Sadly this was messier than I'd hoped an ending by Joss Whedon would be.Some parts will be confusing if you haven't kept up with some of the Spike and Angel comics that came out before this. I read a bunch and I was still scratching my head once or twice.
I loved Buffy and Angel and was so excited when I first started reading Season 8. I just wanted a better pay off than this. I thought I'd be reading Buffy comics forever when I first started.
In the end I never did buy any of season 9. Sometimes I think about giving it a go, but after the shark jumping in this, I always seem to find something better to read. Which is sad because Buffy was a big love and Joss Whedon has always been a favorite writer/director.

Just when you thought it could end, it doesn't. It is the best way to cont. the story.
If you've been reading Season 8 of Buffy you know that it's been quite a ride. All of the individual volumes has been great as stand alones, but they haven't neccessarily gelled as one complete story with allot of subplots here and there some of them not really being resolved. In a sense it feels like the story has not been so much about continuing the TV series so much as establishing a new format. But Joss does what he does best in this volume by conluding an arch in a epic and grand finale that brings (almost) all the threads to a close. Pretty much everyone from the past 7 volumes shows up in this collection, and even a surprise appearances from fan favorites from the series. It wouldnt' be a Buffy season finale if things weren't changed forever and if they weren't setting up he upcoming season. it really leaves you wondering where the story can go from here. I really like it and I think the creative minds behind this book have a better understanding how to tell Buffy stories in comic book form. I'm really looking forward to Buffy Season 9 now.
The eighth collected volume of Buffy the Vampire Slayer Season Eight is pretty much the "season finale" of the series I guess, as creator Joss Whedon returns to the title. After the revelation of Twilight's identity and Buffy's purpose in the last volume, this is where things really come to a head. Buffy, Angel, Spike, Xander, Giles, Faith, Dawn, Willow, and everybody that has come and gone in this comic have their time, and not all of them get out alive either. Though the end result is honestly a bit underwhelming, and not all questions have been resolved either, Last Gleaming is a fitting conclusion regardless. Even though we'll be seeing more Buffy in comic form on the horizon, I sadly feel that this may be as good as the Buffy comics are going to get for the time being. Series artist Georges Jeanty provides his usual solid work, and the climax manages to pack an emotional punch too. All in all, Last Gleaming is a fitting finale to this Buffy series, but here's hoping that the best is yet to come.
This ending to season eight does finish putting together all of the plot points and resolves most of the questions left over from the television series. The season
, as most reviewers have already said lost its way in the middle, but this collection salvaged the key elements to complete the story. For any fan, I recommend this season as a whole regardless of its over the top problems and this volume in particular.
The previous volume of Season Eight, "Twilight," was incredibly silly, to put it mildly. Even Joss Whedon, in his afterword to this volume, allows that they went a little crazy and got away from what makes Buffy a good franchise in that volume.
So this volume is all about wrapping up the over-the-top place we last saw our characters and bringing them back down to earth, literally, in one character's case.
As a result, it's not necessarily the most narratively satisfying -- the big should-be-character-defining death in this volume just sort of HAPPENS and things move on -- because Whedon and company are busy cleaning up all the mess from the night before.
That said, after "Twilight," I wasn't sure if I wanted to come back for Season Nine. "Last Gleaming" changed that. I'm definitely back in, especially since the creators seem to have identified what it was that made Buffy and company work to begin with.
Recommended mostly for diehards who are committed to seeing it through. Not a great volume for casual fans who aren't particularly concerned about Buffy continuity issues.
I'm a major Buffy fan but I was skeptical of the comic book format. Even as a kid I didn't read comics past a very young age. But the first few volumes were quite a surprise. I was really getting into it. Then the last two volumes and wow, what a letdown. For one thing I hate it when people who are supposed to have been killed a long time ago come back without a damn good explanation other than the writers were too lazy to think up something new which is the way this felt. And all the seed, mother Earth stuff seemed more like what I would expect from a high school boys first attempt at fiction rather than from experienced writers. I may read Season 9 but I'll wait until its at the library rather than purchase any more because i felt very ripped off by the last two volumes of season 8.
Sadly this was messier than I'd hoped an ending by Joss Whedon would be.
Some parts will be confusing if you haven't kept up with some of the Spike and Angel comics that came out before this. I read a bunch and I was still scratching my head once or twice.
