The Blood of Cowards A Dark Supernatural Fantasy eBook Matt Cole

Blood of Cowards presents an interesting sequel to Ghost Drums. The author successfully continued the story of Lazarus and how he struggled to satisfy his vampiric cravings. But what impresses me is how Matt would describe the scenes in vivid detail almost like giving you a front seat to a play. This e- book maybe a short story but it was enough for me to understand more about cowardice and why it is such an undesirable trait; and why man's instinctive nature for self preservation can bring about the best or worst in people (and even in vampires as well).

The Blood of Cowards A Dark Supernatural Fantasy eBook Matt Cole Reviews

'The Blood of Cowards' introduces Lazarus Kalon, a supremely powerful vampire, to the world of fiction. In this exploit, Lazarus finds himself starved for blood whilst caught up amidst the violence at the end of the American Civil War in the south east state of Georgia. There is plenty of food available but it has its risks and then there's the little matter of hanging onto his hoarded treasure. Dilemmas abound in this journey into the lonely mind of a blood-sucker.

As with Matt Cole's other two short stories, this tale excels in character creation and descriptive narrative. The author has a flair for the colourful sentence and it suits his genre well. This story reads like the first part of many adventures to follow and I hope that Matt Cole continues with these excellently worded gems of horror.

Bram Stoker would be proud of the evolution of his creation.

I actually read `Ghost Drums' before this and realised that it was the wrong chronological order. It didn't spoil my enjoyment but I would advise anyone else to read this first.
The Blood of Cowards is an impressive example of a successful short story, where each word is carefully chosen and each sentence fits perfectly together to compose a harmonious and powerful story.

The story unfolds with a vivid description of the surroundings, which makes you feel like standing right next to the vampire Lazarus, hearing the gunfire and smelling the stench of war, but also perceiving the beauty of the countryside.

The plot, a vampire preying on three deserted soldiers and considering turning one of them, is fascinating in its simplicity, yet at the same time exceptional in its stunning outcome.

Reading The Blood of Cowards was a real pleasure and I admire the author's eloquence. Words like "with a delicious stab of pain", "...emerald peaks surrounded the black water like a titan guard", "...like a wave of red paint crashing against my brain" created perfectly clear mental images with an amazing effortlessness.

Watering your mouth, this short story makes you wish for a full-length novel about the life and destiny of Lazarus Kalon, vampire.
Blood of Cowards is an unconventional vampire story, moving the setting out of the castles of Europe and the voodoo swamps of New Orleans to an unlikely location the outskirts of Atlanta during the Civil War. Since this is only a short story, there isn't a whole lot of room for character development, but we are treated to a patchwork of characters that unfortunately skew a bit towards convention and cliche. The premise of the vampire hunter stalking less than honorable Confederate soldiers is an intriguing idea, but the execution seemed a bit by-the-numbers. The conclusion was unexpected but somewhat abrupt and unbelievable. All in all, a decent story, but check out "Ghost Drums" by the same author for a much better and more gripping tale.
A short story written from a vampire's 1st person POV. Got a little lost in the first half with over-describing the landscape without moving the narrative forward. However the 2nd half is excellent with an unexpected twist.

Worth reading if you fancy a short vampire story.
The Blood of Cowards is an unconventional vampire short story set in the outskirts of Atlanta, Georgia during the American Civil War. Fleeing before the advancing Union Army in order to save his fortune from Sherman's advance, Lazarus must fight the blood lust he feels when the injured and maimed are scented. Not having fed for days he is beginning to experience weakness. As his blood lust is about to cost him dearly he catches scent of three Confederate deserters, a veritable feast. But nothing comes without a cost, even for vampires, as Lazarus is about to discover.

Beautifully written, well developed with an interesting story and a strong protagonist, The Blood of Cowards is one of the best short stories of this genre' I have read. The scenic descriptions are so well done I could almost feel the humidity in the air around me. The limited dialogue was realistic allowing the reader to hear the words. The protagonist's backstory was just enough to set the stage for the events to follow.

A very well done short story with a literary feel to it, I will be reading more of Mr. Cole's work.

The Blood of Cowards is another dark fantasy short story from author Matt Cole. Mr. Cole sent me a copy of this title for review and as this is a short story, my review will be a short one to avoid blowing any plot lines.

As with my feelings on his short story Abode of the Damned, I was very impressed with Matt Cole's imagery. He's definitely got a natural talent for painting a picture. The Blood of Cowards is another one that pulls you in right away and keeps you interested. I was highly impressed with the story.

My only hang up with The Blood of Cowards was I felt the ending was a bit lackluster. It really didn't do the rest of this fabulously written story justice. However, I would ask that you not let that deter you from giving the story a try.

Overall, I am giving The Blood of Cowards 3 stars. A solid story and worth a read.
I'm a little confused. I purchased "the blood of cowards" from for my kindle. Inside was the story "Ghost drums." Ghost Drums is a good story, but there is no sign of the "blood of cowards".
